commu-flirting
Well, it may just a short one for me today...
Yesterday, I was driving home from work... A nice 1.5 (up to 3) hour trek down the beltway... It's not fun... especially when it's topping a very long, frusterating day at work... (We're in the middle of a move to a new office building, plus I have about a zillion HUGE projects going on - I used to think I was an excellent multitasker, now I know better!)
So anyway, I'm watching my gas needle fall closer and closer to E and I'd moved about 5 miles in 15 minutes... (and for any other beltway veterans out there, you know this is actually a pretty good pace for rush hour). I'm frusterated, out of cigarettes and without my CDs (the boy's borrowing them to burn some)... Needless to say I am in a horrible mood and I know I'll be stuck the same way for at least another hour.
But suddenly, I get that feeling that I'm being watched... Not so much an eerie feeling, like in a scary movie, but more of an exhilerating one... it was a little bit exciting, to be honest... I check my rearview mirror... nothing out of the ordinary... But I glance to the right, out of my passenger window and -
BAM!! - staring back at me is a HOTTIE who happens to be driving beside me.
All feelings of frusteration automatically melt away as I give a doubleglance and let a coy, "I see you", smile slide up the right corner of my mouth. I look away... and then back... we both laugh... We're a temporary match made in heaven... This continues for several miles and about 20 minutes until, alas, my lane picks up its pace and I pass the boy forever...
It took me 40 minutes to get home after that... but I surely wasn't craving a cig quite as bad - and I didn't mind listening to just the radio at all! I suppose my point is that road-flirtation (or my new coined term: commu-flirting) helps to make the commute home bearable.
And it's safe enought that even those in relationships can enjoy it as well. It's harmless... I mean, Lord knows, most
people would never give their numbers out or pursue anything with anyone that happened to be on the road next to them, flirting - no matter how attractive the commu-flirter may be (because believe me, the boy yesterday was a regular adonis)... and yet, when you drive on, as you eventually must (~sigh~), commu-flirting will leave you in a much uplifted mood and traffic never seems quite as bad...
PS - guess this wasn't too short after all :-)
You are what you wear....or not?
Today marks a sad day for celebrities and lawyers.
Johnnie Cochran,
O.J. Simpson's defense lawyer who famously phrased that "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" (Referring to the glove that was supposedly used to kill O.J.'s ex-wife
Nicole Brown and her friend
Ronald Goldman) has passed away. A history lesson for you today if your brain is a little rusty on the subject: Since the glove didn't fit O.J.'s hand, he sure is hell didn't committ the crime. Ah,
that makes sense....
O.J. Simpson was one among many celebrities to infamously face trial in the limelight. I can recall a few celebs who recently have faced trial or jail - and are being remembered not for what they did, but for what they wore.
When
Martha Stewart exited prison last month draped in a multi colored poncho made by an inmate, she didn't intend on making as big as a statement as the media portrayed it to be.....or did she?
Lil Kim has recently escaped from her normal fashion routine of skimpy hot pink ensembles to more tasteful dress suiting while facing trial. And of course, my personal favorite,
Michael Jackson showing up to court late a few weeks ago - in pajama bottoms.
Celebrities are known to make fashion statements, but are they trying to prove their innocence by becoming what they wear...or in O.J.'s case, what he didn't?
For Lil Kim and Jackson - their styles seem to be fitting for how they would like to be portrayed - at least for the time being. Who knows, a few months from now they might just be sporting cute little orange jump suits.
Now how's that for classy?
The D.C. Dress Code
Let's face it, D.C. is not known for it's fashion. Walking down M street every morning and evening I can't help but cringe at some of the outfits I am forced to glance at as people pass by. I have come to the conclusion that D.C.'s dress code consists of two colors for all seasons: black and navy blue. We are made fun of by other cities for our lack of fashion sense and boring dark suits worn all year long for those "business casual" work environments. One would think that in a city of such class, art, and structure that people would absorb into the mold that was laid upon this historically powerful and professional city. What I see is a city of potential. We don't dress in ultra skimpy, offensive clothing to work. We are shy, cautious, and conservative in choosing an appropriate outfit. We simply are safe. In a city where power and egos rule, it should be acceptable to occasionally venture out of our jet black suits by adding a bit of flare, such as a pink scarf around the neck or boasting colored, pointy shoes. Our First Lady, Laura Bush, and even the First Daughters, Barbara and Jenna Bush, have set the bar high for fashion and style in the city. We have yet to take after that. Not risque dressing, per se, but adding a bit of personality into the wardrobe would boost your confidence and make others crave to be around you. The leading women in our city have taken the risk to do so, and have set the example for the rest of us to follow. A revolution for the D.C. dress code is in the works, and we have the power to brighten up this "dull" city and show others that we too, know good fashion. If you aren't sure that you might be a victim of D.C. contagious fashion mishaps, this might help:
